Junior / Medior Scientific Software Engineer

The job

  • You develop user-friendly scientific software tools for groundwater and subsurface research;
  • You work together with scientific software engineers and geohydrologcial experts;
  • You analyze the software requirements together with product owners and specialists;
  • To explore the latest IT technologies to accelerate the software for simulating groundwater flow, water availability and water quality from catchment to global scale;
  • You explore the possibilities of new technologies for application in the field of groundwater modeling;
  • You will be part of a team of scientific software engineers, who work in close cooperation with each other.

We offer a junior or medior position in close cooperation between the Deltares Software Centre and Unit Subsurface and Groundwater Systems.

The Deltares Software Centre develops numerical simulation software, where we make use of various techniques such as flexible grids, high performance computing, modeling frameworks and user interfaces. Our staff works with modern development techniques such as Agile, TDD and XP. The user interfaces are mostly written in C#, the numerical simulation software in Fortran and early warning systems in Java. We use Python and C + + as well.
The Unit Subsurface and Groundwater Systems conducts research and provides specialist advice on groundwater and the subsurface, for authorities and the corporate sector. The essence of our work is the development-, application- and sharing of knowledge in partnerships with universities, other research institutions, governmental agencies and businesses alike.

The position will be based in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Job qualifications

  • You have completed a M.Sc. in Computer Science and have affinity with scientific software, ideally related to hydrodynamics (e.g. computational fluid dynamics, Darcy flow), or
  • You have completed a M.Sc. on a hydrodynamic or geohydrological topic and have experience in programming scientific software;
  • You have experience with high level programming languages (FORTRAN, C++). Experience with Python, Java and parallel computing (MPI) is a plus;
  • You have the ambition to develop high-quality software in a scientific environment;
  • You are eager to work on new technological challenges;
  • You have the competence to develop solutions for complex problems;
  • You have good social and communication skills;
  • Individually as well as in a team you thrive and exceed;
  • You speak English fluently, and Dutch as well, or you are willing to learn Dutch.
