Deltares is an independent, Netherlands based institute for applied research in the field of water, subsurface and infrastructure. The department Hydrodynamics for Infrastructure & Industry - which is part of the unit Hydraulic Engineering - is looking for an enthusiastic:


Senior Advisor / Researcher Hydrodynamics & CFD


Our group of some 20 Researchers/Advisors concentrates on evaluation and optimization of hydraulic designs and operations of e.g. sluices, weirs, locks, closure works, power plants, desalination plants, tidal power installations, and drinking/sewage water pipeline systems for governmental and industrial clients around the world. The group uses and develops a wide range of tools to investigate flow behaviour, ranging from state-of-the-art computer models to physical scale models with latest measurement techniques and engineering software in these projects.


If you excel in hydrodynamics and CFD modelling and you have a strong drive to initiate projects and to develop markets from your state-of-the-art knowledge base, it is you we are looking for.


The job
Your main activities are to:
• Work as hydraulic specialist and project leader on challenging projects related to complex mostly free-surface flow behaviour in civil and industrial infrastructure with a focus on application of CFD methods. Knowledge of Star CCM+ and OpenFoam is an advantage
• Set-up projects and research programmes together with external academic and industrial parties
• Publish outstanding projects, knowledge and/or innovation and build an international position as hydrodynamics & CFD specialist
• Build up and maintain a high-end client network
• Coach junior and medior hydraulic engineers, share your knowledge and network
• Care for knowledge development, knowledge transfer and quality assurance of our CFD related projects.
• Initiate and develop improvements to our CFD approach and pre- and post-processing methods.


Your profile
• You are a motivated professional with a PhD or MSc degree in Applied Physics, Mathematics, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or similar
• You have over 10 years of experience with CFD modelling and CFD software such as Star CCM+ (preferably), Fluent, OpenFoam and/or ANSYS CFX, and a profound understanding of challenges related to e.g. modelling multiphase flows, choosing boundary conditions, modelling of turbulence and mixing, and especially hydrodynamic free-surface modelling.
• You have in-depth understanding of hydrodynamics and experience with projects applying this knowledge to flow problems related to civil and industrial infrastructure
• You have an international network of relevant contacts and you are able and motivated to acquire specialist consultancy and research projects.
• You have the ambition to work on an international top level, like to challenge results and want to understand fundamental behaviour
• You have the skills to educate and stimulate junior and medior researcher/advisors
• You are fluent in speaking and writing in English
• You should have, or develop within a few years, Dutch language skills (writing and speaking).


The team
The Hydrodynamics for Infrastructure & Industry Department is formed by over 20 enthusiastic professionals working on simulations and experiments of various civil and industrial infrastructure projects. In our work we use various laboratory facilities including test basins for pump sumps, ship locks and a pressurized closed pipeline loop for water and multiphase experiments, and apply specialist software such as WANDA for water hammer analysis and STAR CCM+ and OpenFoam for CFD computations. In R&D and non-standard consultancy projects we combine concrete practical relevance with high standards for quality. We achieve this by continuously developing state-of-the-art knowledge and techniques, combined with a high level of client interaction.

The working environment
You will be working in our Delft offices and laboratories in a project environment with typical project durations varying from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Project teams vary in size and change with each project, but are mostly limited to 2 to 5 persons. There is a very nice “we are making this all work together” atmosphere, where everybody wants to excel as a group and strives to acquire great projects and deliver cutting edge results based on fundamental understanding.
