Deltares is looking for an enthusiastic MSc student with an interest in hydrodynamics, turbulence and stratified flows, that would like to work on this internship assignment for 3 to 4 months.

You can start directly, but the start date is open for discussion. Deltares will provide the student allowance of €550 per month.

Effects of strategical dredging on salt water intrusion
Recently, a dredging project to deepen the Nieuwe Waterweg has started. Deepening this channel improves the accessibility of the Port of Rotterdam, but also causes more sea water to propagate land inward. Several studies have been conducted (and some are still ongoing) on measures to counteract the effects of the deepening on the salt intrusion in the shipping channel and adjacent areas.

Last year, Rijkswaterstaat introduced a new idea to reduce salt water intrusion into the harbours. Since the shipping channel already has to be dredged at a regular basis in order to maintain a certain navigation depth, the idea came up to dredge more strategically and create additional trenches. By adapting the bathymetry very locally, additional mixing might be introduced (e.g. blockage of the flow, inducing internal waves, spiral motion of the flow) which may result in a decrease of the salt wedge intrusion.

The goal of this internship is to explore the possible effects of several dredging strategies on the salt water intrusion and to indicate which physical mechanisms are most important in this process. During the internship you will perform a desk study focussing on identifying the relevant physical mechanisms. You will have to organise interviews and meetings with several experts within and outside Deltares to gather the necessary knowledge while keeping an overview and working towards the overall project aim.
