Department Head Marine and Coastal Information Science (MCI)

The team

The Marine and Coastal Systems unit consists of approximately 130 employees, divided into 5 departments: Environmental Hydrodynamics, Applied Morphology, Marine and Coastal Management, Ecosystems and Sediment Dynamics and Marine and Coastal Information Science. The unit operates in a challenging and dynamic social environment. Our main focus is on the sustainable use, maintenance and protection of the marine system and coastal zone, which is under increasing pressure from growth of population, economic activities and climate change. Our task is to develop and use our expert knowledge and skills, together with our knowledge partners. Our projects are characterized by the use of technical, but also social innovations. Innovations in supporting tools are crucial here.

The Marine and Coastal Information Science department develops, implements and maintains coastal information systems. In this domain we integrate and connect data, information and system knowledge into smart tools and applications to provide (customised) information for end users. A large part of the systems are marine data and prediction systems based on Delft-FEWS. These are used, for example, in 24/7 operational crisis management, for issuing alerts and alarms. The focus is not only on the risk itself, but also the (social) impact. The systems will be developed to predict the impact of a real time threat. High demands are placed on the products that the department develops in that area. New technologies and data streams, such as the operational use of satellite data, intelligent archiving of (forecast) data, and concepts like "internet of things" and "big data" play an important role in the projects. Projects are carried out in The Netherlands and abroad, for governments, industries and semi-governmental organizations. Close interactions with the end-user or with the consortium partners is an important task to identify the specific requirements in knowledge and system developments.

As head of the department, you give lead to the various disciplinary en multi-disciplinary teams that form the basis of a successful functioning department. You act as a player-coach, whose natural leadership enthuses, focuses and gives direction to the various teams within the department. The appointment period for this function is 4 years with the prospect of reappointment.

The job

  • Managing approximately 25 highly educated professionals and contribute to their personal growth;
  • Coaching of professionals in both proposal, project, time management and knowledge enterpreneurship;
  • Creating an environment and atmosphere that takes into account opportunities and innovation and entrepreneurship from a positive impulse;
  • Take the lead in developing knowledge and market ambitions;
  • Achieve the ambitions of the department by further expanding and renewing the (inter) national knowledge and market position and developing internal and external networks;
  • Integral management of finance, market and project development, research and innovation of the department;
  • Be part of the unit management and contribute to the strategy formation and implementation, in conjunction with Deltares mission.
Job qualifications
  • You are a team player and you put team performance central;
  • You have an entrepreneurial mind and have experience in working with market parties, other knowledge institutes and (Dutch) governments;
  • You have an academic degree and experience in the discipline of the department;
  • You preferably have experience in managing and coaching professionals, you know how to encourage and facilitate employees in their development as a professional;
  • You are a good (national and international) networker and able to connect both content and people;
  • You have experience with applied research and advisory projects in the Netherlands and have extensive experience with international projects;
  • You have an affinity with the application and latest developments of relevant software, models and information systems in the field. This enables you to develop and pursue a medium- and long-term strategy for the department;
  • You have an integral view and you are able to connect the different expertise within the department to other fields of work of Deltares.
