Our Unit Inland Water Systems, Department Operational Water Management is currently seeking a:

Junior Optimization Software Engineer

The job
Your main activities are to:
• Analyze mathematical optimization problems for properties such a continuity, convexity, and scaling;
• Develop technical software for decision support in the water sector;
• Work on product development with a team of software engineers and specialists;
• Assist our application teams to develop physical models and formulate optimization goals of appropriate complexity.
Deltares develops early warning systems and decision support systems for water related issues. Deltares developed an early warning system named Delft-FEWS that captures meteorological data, makes hydrological simulations and makes predictions with regard to flooding and drought. In addition we have developed a decision support system (RTC-Tools) that helps the water manager to decide how to operate their system. RTC-Tools is used for water allocation, dispatch scheduling of pumps and weirs, as well as for hydropower operations.

Your location is Delft.

Your profile

• You have an MSc in Applied mathematics (or similar scientific education), you have affinity with natural sciences and you have experience with software development.
• You have the ambition to develop high quality software in a scientific environment.
• You have analytical problem solving skills;
• You have basic knowledge of operations research;
• You have basic knowledge of mathematical analysis;
• You have proven experience object oriented programming languages such as Python;
• Knowledge of fluid dynamics is an advantage;
• You are motivated to work on technical challenges and experience with complex software architecture is an advantage;
• You are interested in the internal workings of optimization software packages;
• You have good social and communication skills;
• You can work independently, but you are also a team player;
• You have a good command of the English language.

The team
The Operational water management department is formed by approx. 30 enthusiastic professionals working on various operational water management projects. In R&D and non-standard consultancy projects we work on the continuous development of state-of-the-art knowledge and techniques, combined with a high level of client interaction.
